Hawaii’s Big Island is famous for its volcano, its coffee, and its southern exposure. The rich volcanic soil contributes to some truly lush flora. The lilies in this painting had no doubt benefitted from the island’s geology and geography. The lined shapes, bright flowers, and dark, seemingly translucent water evoke a sense of stained glass or an antique Tiffany lamp.
