In the early morning, blackbirds took sanctuary in budding Spring branches. Their opaque shapes of dark Prussian blue contrast sharply with the warm orange hues of their botanical host and the mottled light punctuating the scene. Our visual interactions with these colors and shapes help us move around the canvas and perhaps reignite our awareness of our symbiotic relationship with the rest of the natural world.

The wooded seven-acre Weyanoke sanctuary in Norfolk is situated between a residential neighborhood and one of the largest maritime trans-modal coal terminals in the US. It is a testament to our irrepressible human instinct to connect with the rest of nature for our restoration and our re-creation.
