Art can serve as many things – an expression, a prompt, a challenge. We the People is perhaps all of these. It is the visual story of the neighborhoods of Ghent and West Ghent in Norfolk, VA - communities confronted with the day-to-day burden of choosing how to meet our individual and collective aspirations for purpose, identity, and belonging. Is a community the people, places, and things that simply wind up in one spot or is it some connected and purposeful whole? If e pluribus unum, then who can be part of it, who is to be excluded, and how might we make the choice? The painting offers a fleeting moment to consider our occasionally uncomfortable, interconnectedness; and the possibility of creating a place for all of us to survive, thrive, and belong - a place possible only upon a foundation of understanding. Art like We the People can be a powerful ‘campfire’ for reflection, conversation, and fellowship. It is my hope that it serves that purpose here.
